Brooklyn, New York, home of some of entertainment’s most gifted and vibrant superstars also gave birth to this 21st Century rap phenomenon. She is intelligent. She is fascinating…She IS Hip Hop.

Growing up under the reign of artists like Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G, Nas, Foxy Brown, Lil Kim, Missy Elliott, Da Brat, DMX, and Tupac, Candis was inspired to pair her gift of writing and her love for music. Recording her first song in 2000, she began to make a name for herself right at home, in Brooklyn’s Farragut & Fort Greene Housing Projects.

In 2003, Candis composed a tear-jerking number about the struggles of her childhood and the loss of her grandmother, titled “It’s OK.” It was at this moment that she started to finally see hard work and dedication pay off. The song earned her a $10,000 college scholarship in the annual BMG World of Expressions songwriting contest.

In the summer of 2010, Candis partnered with local Jersey City rapper, 1st Wonder, to form an entertainment company, F02 Music Group. Given the AKA ‘SheIsHipHop’ by her new business partner after seeing her work in the booth, the moniker became a no brainer! Her work would go on to land her appearances on MTV’s RapFix Live and Sway in the Morning.

In 2013, after the F02 Music Group split, Candis formed DreamHouse Entertainment with the vision of not only creating great music, but also with the intention of using her influence and experiences to educate artists and assist them in pursuing their dreams. In 2015, Candis welcomed her cousin, Jonathan “Hook” Fleming on board as co-CEO to help her run the business and the careers of the four artists on the DreamHouse Entertainment roster. To be compared to Jay-Z of former Roc-A-Fella Records, Candis also plays for the team she owns. Unlike the many female rappers who’ve entered the game under the wings of their male counterparts, Candis is setting herself apart as a female boss with no need of male validation.

Candis also has a message in her music that separates her from her peers — a “heart-felt” message that captures the essence of hip hop. Since the release of her self-titled mixtape @SheIsHipHop, and her iTunes EP Soundtrack of My Life, Candis has received nominations for Most Original Female Artist, Best Female Rapper, and recently brought home an award for Best Female Lyricist. She also received an award for her website, SheIsHipHop.com, within 6 months of its launch. Candis not only uses her website as a platform to promote her own music, but she also blogs about community issues and promotes other artists as well, including her “Queen of the Month” articles which honor other women who are making a mark in their respective industries.

Candis is just as committed to making a difference in the lives of those outside of her music circle. She volunteers her time regularly as a mentor and leader in youth-focused programs, such as Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta, and Everybody Wins! Atlanta, a lunchtime reading program. Business owner, rapper, mom, college graduate, mentor — among other titles, Candis is definitely the Artist to Watch in 2016 and beyond!
